Menaka | Pure Veg Restaurant | Chennai
One Of The Oldest and Best Udipi Restaurants in Chennai
If the name Menaka conjures visions of celestial beings, the food proves it is a place fit for the Gods. Menaka restaurant inside Hotel Palmgrove is one of the best and oldest vegetarian restaurants in Chennai. Menaka is located on the ground floor, a few yards away from the hotel reception. The ambience is soothing and there is plenty of space, air and light.
Our Order For Dinner
My family and I went for dinner to Menaka. The tomato soup is very tasty and highly recommended. It is thick and has a few bread crumbs in it. On most visits, I have ordered for a Tomato Soup. It comes in two sizes i.e. medium and large. The one you see in the picture below is of medium size. So if you are less hungry or want to eat many dishes you know which size to choose.
The masala papad is quite famous here. The dish is a bit spicy as the vegetables are mixed in chilli powder and served on lijjat papad which is also spicy. Hence a piece of lemon is served to neutralise the spice.
It is a shame if you do not order for South Indian food at Menaka which is a pure veg and Udipi restaurant. Udipi cuisine is a cuisine of South India. It forms an important part of Tuluva-Mangalorean cuisine and takes its name from Udupi, a city on the southwest coast of India in the Tulunadu region. Ghee roast is one of the variations of dosa.
Idiyappam Kurma is a favourite restaurant combo. Idiyappam is a rice noodle dish. Idiyappam is culinary specialty throughout Tamilnadu, Kerala, Sri Lanka and southern areas of Karnataka. It is also a culinary staple in Sri Lanka. The name idiyappam derives from the Tamil word idi, meaning 'broken down', and appam, meaning "pancake".
Paneer Tikka is very delicious here. I like the size of paneer chunks here as they are quite big in comparison to other restaurants, and they are marinated and grilled very well too.
Gobi Manchurian is a favourite appetizer and it is crispy, more so like pakoda. Though Gobi Manchurian is an Indo Chinese dish, at Menaka restaurant you will find it differently.
The Naan Paneer Butter Masala is yet another favourite dish of mine here. For Rs 135, you get three pieces of Plain Naan or Butter Naan along with a cup of curry. The quantity is just right for one person. Whoever fixed this quantity before adding it to the menu has done it right.
A mango lassi is basically a yogurt based mango milkshake or smoothie. It has a good taste sweet and sour mixed. Unfortunately, I did not like it a lot this time as the lassi had way too many large chunks of ice cubes. It was not blended properly, and I am guessing this happened because we were the last customers for the evening and the kitchen was closing. I however recommend you to have a Mango Lassi in the next 2 months as it is the Mango season.
History of Hotel Palmgrove
Started in 1973, Palmgrove is a 100% vegetarian hotel located at Chennai and housing 82 rooms and 9 cottages spread over two acres of land. The hotel provides rooms and cottages with features that aim to make your life easier. There is also a bar inside the hotel for those of you who want to have a few drinks along with vegetarian food. Palmgrove is a throwback to the old-school Udupi restaurant and their grainy idlis continue to pull in the crowds. Good luck scoring a table for breakfast on Sunday. There is a lawn for conducting weddings and in fact many of my friends and acquaintances have had their wedding receptions here.
